Elizabeth Hurley’s “Safety Pin” Dress Voted The Greatest of All Time

PHOTOG/IPOL/GLOBE

Elizabeth Hurley’s famous safety pin dress was yesterday hailed as the greatest red carpet gown of all time, according to research by leading UK department store Debenhams. The black Versace frock was worn by Liz, then 29, as she accompanied ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant to the 1994 premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral. A spokeswomen for Debenhams, which carried out the poll, said: ”Liz Hurley’s daring safety pin dress is one of the most famous black dresses worn on the red carpet, which made her a household name overnight. Our research shows how iconic the dresses worn on the red carpet have become with many of the stars making headlines from their outfits.” Audrey Hepburn’s white flower patterned Givenchy dress, which she wore to the 1954 Oscars, was in second place, while third in the poll of 3,000 women was Julia Roberts‘ black and white vintage Valentino dress, which she donned to collect her Best Actress award at the 2001 Oscars. Catherine Zeta-Jones is at number four with the red Versace gown she wore to the 1999 Oscars, while Jennifer Lopez’s daring dress for the 2000 Grammys, by the same designer, was at five. I can’t believe you left off two of the best. The sheer backless number Cate Blanchett wore by John Paul Gaultier the year she was nominated for Elizabeth. And the GORGEOUS tangerine Vera Wang dress worn by Charlize Theron a few years back.

Where is the green Galliano gown Nicole Kidman wore to the Oscars in in 1997???? The detailed embroidery and a slim column were the perfect contrast the the outrageousness of the color.

ktee

showin a bit 2 much boobage 4 my taste…just not classy.

Madaline

That dress is hideous! What if someone unclipped the pins without you noticing somehow? The dress would split in half!

elle

the green dress keira knightley wore for atonement

Red Sky

This does not top the list!Have to say “J-Lo’s low cut green dress” designed by Versace is the top of line and most memorable.

Katelin

Where’s Reese Witherspoon’s 2008 Oscar’s dress?? And what about the dress worn by Charlize Theron at the 2006 Oscar’s?? You left out some great dresses
This Elizabeth Hurley oe is hidious

I agree with ktee — way too much boobage, and it looks really cheap. When I see people wearing clothes that revealing, I assume they’re very insecure.
