That Spring Bag Really Is More Expensive Than Last Year!

Started looking at the new spring clothes and gone into complete sticker shock? You are not alone. We are noticing that prices seem noticably higher than, oh say, a year ago. What’s the deal? Ann Watson, VP fashion director of trendy Manhattan department store Henri Bendel, confirms our suspicions. According to Watson, prices have actually been growing for the past four years: “An average luxury handbag four years ago cost between $900 and $1100, but today the average bag is $1400 to $1900- that’s quite a significant difference!” Check out this new Fendi canvas bag that is $1430 at net-a-porter.com. The reason for this jump is based on simple economics — many materials and labor come from Europe where the dollar is much weaker than the Euro, which means rising prices at the mall. And it’s not like fashion is getting simpler, as Watson points out, “For spring, there are a lot of rosettes, ruffles and trims that consist of a lot of hand work and definitely drives the prices up.” Ironically, the luxury market keeps getting stronger despite the growing prices, with sales continuing to climb. What do you think? Have you noticed a price rise? Is it stopping you from shopping?

Are you kidding me? That is the UGLIEST bag I have ever seen!!!!! I wouldnt pay five dollars for that! Can anyone say bowling bag?

Amanda

I have a question:

Does anyone know who makes the adorable red and white polka dot dress that Mandy Moore wears in “Because I Said So.” Her clothes in the film are so cute and I want them all!!

Autumn

Rising prices just mean that I still don’t get to shop for most luxury items. I only recently started buying Coach handbags and even their prices can be steep. The most expensive bag I have purchased from there was about $700 and I could only swing that because I got a nice bonus. I can’t imagine spending $2000 on a single handbag.

I’ll never notice the price raise as I don’t by anything name brand. I’m not going to waste a month’s income on a purse or a “trend” that will eventually go out of style.

Rachel

this is totally stopping me! i never buy bags if they’re over $500 - $1900 for a bag seems ridiculous!

Ick, $1400 for a canvas bag? And an ugly one at that. No thanks.

In order to get a good quality bag you have to drop some extra money. Right now I’m loving my Fendi Canvas B Bag and I can’t wait until my Bottega Veneta Montaigne in gray crocodile comes in, I ordered in through the Bottega boutique the other day. :-D

am i the only one who thinks that it is disgusting to buy a 2000 dollar pocketbook when there are people in america who can’t afford to buy food for their children?

Juri

excuse me i wouldnt waste a dollar on the junk. can you say tacky that thing may has well have flew out of the milky way

matisse

I can’t imagine spending my entire month’s pay on a BAG. Anyone who can afford this bag clearly has a very very high paying job (and isn’t a teacher like I am, thats for sure) or a significant other with a lot of money. It makes me sick to think that people spend that much money on a purse.
