Both nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama), Evangeline Lilly and Ellen Pompeo are two of the hottest and most stylish stars on television. These primetime leading ladies never fail to wow on the red carpet, both tending to favor long, strapless dresses in jewel tones. Lost’s Evangeline goes for softer, flowing shapes in muted tones — and almost never with embellishment. We could easily picture her in this cobalt Carlos Miele creation, this 24-karat Elie Saab stunner, or for a more subtle look, this navy Derek Lam gown. Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo take a little more risk, playing with beading, cutouts and proportion. She could show off her lithe form in this corseted Versace gown, go vibrant in this orange Oscar de la Renta, or play it safe in this black Monique Lhuiller frock. We usually adore Sarah Jessica Parker’s quirky sense of style. However, we are a little confused by her outfit at the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards Gala last night. The tulip-printed coat reminded some here of a shower curtain, while others appreciated its nipped-in waist. But, we all agree that the Giambattista Valli crimson frock (worn under the coat) was a flop — a voluminous peasant-dress seems more suited for a day on the beach than an awards gala. Even her Christian Louboutins look a little clunky with the outfit, and we never doubt the beauty of his shoes. Is this just a rare mis-step for the normally stylish star? If the People’s Choice Awards were any indication of upcoming award shows like the Golden Globes, we will be seeing more sleek, sparkling and simple dresses than ever before. From Jennifer Aniston’s delicate pale pink Versace slip-dress to Eva Longoria’s shimmering Michael Kors sheath to Halle Berry’s slick gold mini, the stars left their over-the-top gowns at home and came out in simple shapes that played up their fantastic figures. Hair and makeup was surprisingly simple and elegant, as well. And who was the winner of the Love Your Look award? Sandra Bullock took home the trophy in absentia — she was not at the show. Since winning American Idol in 2002, Kelly Clarkson has been no stranger to mixing up her look — from blond to brunette, from sweet to sexy, from long to short — but we still couldn’t help noticing the dramatic difference between her most recent red carpet look and her off-duty style. At the CMT Giants event in late October, Kelly sported a perfectly curled coif and polished makeup. But this week, she visited the Broadway musical Avenue Q with no visible makeup and a newly cropped, darker do.
